Types of Base Oils:
Base oils are typically classified into five groups, as defined by the American Petroleum Institute (API) based on their refining process and properties:
Group I Base Oils (Mineral Oils)
These are solvent-refined oils with a moderate level of purity. They are generally used in less demanding applications, such as automotive oils and industrial lubricants. While they have decent performance characteristics, they are more prone to oxidation and require more frequent oil changes compared to higher-quality oils.
Group II Base Oils (Hydroprocessed Oils)

Group III Base Oils (Synthetic Oils)
Group III base oils are fully synthetic oils produced through a more advanced refining process. These oils are often used in high-performance engine oils and industrial lubricants that require long-lasting protection.
Group IV Base Oils (Polyalphaolefins or PAO)
Group IV base oils are 100% synthetic and offer exceptional performance characteristics, including low pour points, high oxidative stability, and the ability to perform well at both high and low temperatures. PAOs are commonly used in synthetic motor oils, gear oils, and high-performance lubricants.
Group V Base Oils (Other Synthetics and Esters)
Group V oils include a range of base oils, including esters, phosphate esters, and synthetic oils like alkylated naphtalene. These oils are used in specialized applications where high performance and unique properties are required, such as in aviation lubricants, high-temperature applications, and synthetic oils.
